Strider, the sequel to Beverly Cleary’s Newbery Award winner Dear Mr. Henshaw, follows Leigh Botts as he rediscovers his old journal and again decides to record his thoughts. Now 14, he is dealing with issues familiar to many of today’s kids: divorce, family monetary issues, girl problems, and hopes of being popular. But Leigh is also working out a joint custody agreement with his best friend Barry—for their dog.
Laurie McGrath, Instructional Resource Teacher at Park Hall Elementary, wrote these lesson plans for Strider based on the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum. You may remember Laurie—a former 5th grade teacher, she was featured in the 2007-2008 Recorded Books catalog with colleague Jennifer Cord of White Marsh Elementary. Laurie’s lesson plans for Strider outline each day’s activities for a complete 2-week course on the book. This week, we’re posting the first 5 days’ activities, with accompanying audio samples to play for your students. We’ll post the second week of activities on 9/22/08.
